IKEA: Disassembly Instructions

By 2030 IKEA aim to help 1 billion people to live more sustainably. One initiative was to raise awareness of the "fast furniture" issue and emphasise that their furniture is designed to last. We needed to encourage customers to extend the product life of their purchases, and create something that encourages customers to take part in.

The creative team took the iconic IKEA assembly instructions and reversed them to create a set of Disassembly Instructions. Data was analysed for 2 years on selected products which identified IKEA’s most popular products that were also listed most often on Gumtree.

The Disassembly Instructions help customers take IKEA furniture apart correctly when selling, storing or moving it to a new home. Extending furniture’s life and reducing its impact on the environment was key to this brief. As an environmentalist, working on a brief that encourages the re-use and re-sell of products was interesting and very rewarding.

Featured in multiple publications, the redesigned Disassembly Instructions spread the sustainability message through a simple idea and carefully considered design. With 1.1 billion impressions, we demonstrated how customers can make items they already have last longer.
